SEF is an all-volunteer organization that raises money to fund grants which put resources and programs directly into the classroom. Shrewsbury Public School teachers write grant applications seeking funding for unique learning experiences and resources that will directly benefit students.
SEF will also celebrate the recipients of the John P. Collins Awards for Excellence. This award honors the exemplary efforts of those whose work brings to life the mission of the Shrewsbury Public Schools: to provide students with the skills and knowledge for the 21st century, an appreciation of our democratic tradition and the desire to continue to learn throughout life. The award is named for former Superintendent, John P. Collins, PhD, who served for 16 years in Shrewsbury (1978-1994) and continues to exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and a commitment to lifelong learning. The Community Service Award is granted to a town leader who, goes above and beyond in delivering outstanding services to the community and to the Shrewsbury Public Schools. The recipient of this year’s award is the Shrewsbury High School Community Service Program which, through the efforts of countless high school students embodies a strong commitment to community service. Since 2011 the students at Shrewsbury High School have performed a total of 96,293 service hours. The Shrewsbury High School mission statement not only refers to challenging, diverse learning opportunities; promoting creativity and independent thinking, it also states students should be empowered to become capable, caring and active contributors to the world in which they live. While the number of community service hours is impressive; more importantly the activities performed and the good they brought into the lives of others can't be measured. Students at Shrewsbury High School take time to serve the community, while maintaining their studies and co-curricular activities. Community service projects have been done through formal, planned events or simple gestures that let someone less fortunate know they are cared about and valued. The culture of Shrewsbury High School is that community service is not something extra, but part of the fabric of the school. Education in Shrewsbury includes learning what it means to be good community members who understand and appreciate the importance of giving back to the community. The students, administration and teachers at Shrewsbury High School have created an environment that fosters strong community service that enriches the lives of those they help as well as their own.
