We recognize the Town’s educational and municipal leaders for their hard work and for the talent that is a stewards a project and invests large amounts of time and resources in taking that project to completion. The winners of the 2018–2019 Impact Awards are Meg Belsito, Amy Clouter, and Chris Girardi Fifteen grants, totaling $13,962.89 have been awarded to the Shrewsbury Public Schools for the 2018–2019 school year. Grants for the following year will be considered in the fall of 2019.
“Continuing to Support Shrewsbury High School Students with the Emotional Resources They Need” Beth Neiman (Shrewsbury High School) To replenish items in anxiety tool-kit, and to purchase sufficient back up supplies meet demand due to increased enrollment at SHS. “Listen to This! Creating Mobile Podcasting Booths at Sherwood Middle School” Lisa Daly (Sherwood Middle School) To purchase equipment to create mobile classroom podcasting booths in order to create an avenue for students in the Sherwood school community to reach authentic audiences. “Math “Anti-Bored Games”: Engaging Students While Building Number Sense & Computational Fluency” Melissa McCann (Sherwood Middle School) To purchase “Tang Math” resources for all grade 5 classrooms that will offer supplemental activities to support students in their development of number sense and computational fluency. “Discovering Relaxation” Lisa Pashou and Amy Russell (Sherwood Middle School) To allow the purchase of a tricycle, helmet and bean bag chairs to introduce the importance of physical exercise as well as relaxation as key components to helping students discover a means to exert their energy safely and find comfort in their surroundings “The Changemaker Project” Kelly Lawlor (Shrewsbury High School) To support this project based learning opportunity for students to focus on a number of topics from education to the environment, and from mental health to poverty. “The Calvin Coolidge Caldecott” Alice Brennan Fund Early Childhood Grant Lesley Burnap and Annemarie Hurley (Calvin Coolidge Elementary School) To help students become enthusiastic readers, critical thinkers, and thoughtful evaluators. Students will read and evaluate a set of (12) picture books published in 2018. “Bears and Wolves and Troll, Oh My…” Camille Viscomi (Walter J. Paton Elementary School) To purchase fairy tale kits that will enhance curriculum by providing students and teachers with a stronger grasp of science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on learning that draws meaningful connections with real-world applications. “Literature as Windows, Mirrors & Sliding Glass Doors in High School English Classroom” Erin Palazzo (Shrewsbury High School) To allow the purchase of books to expand the classroom library. The books will serve as a scaffold to help students work through challenging texts and naturally improve their vocabulary and grammar skills. “Synergize for Effective Learning” Jeff Lane (Shrewsbury High School) To allow for the purchase of the Adventure Curricula for Physical Education Pack. These lesson plans are comprised of activities designed to develop age-appropriate social and emotional learning skills such as conflict resolution, leadership, communication, and cooperative problem solving. “Cool Science – The Journey Continues” Carrie Peacock (Sherwood Middle School) To provide money needed for material to expand demonstration of particulate model for matter, a working definition of temperature, and a foundation for ideal gas laws to include all 5th grade trams and expansion to 6th grade teams. “E.E.K. 2.0 – Environmental Education for Kids” Kara Frankian (Floral Street Elementary School) To purchase Acorn Naturalist Compact Student Binoculars for use during lessons that involve the nature trail behind Floral Street School. “Science Presentations in the Elementary/Middle Schools” Melinda Moynihan (Shrewsbury High School) To provide supplies needed by the Chemistry Club to use when visiting elementary schools and the middle schools to conduct demonstrations. “Adventure Education: Surviving, Thriving, and Exploring in the Natural World” Nathan Forest & Kathy Scibelli (Sherwood/Oak Middle Schools) To provide The Adventure Curriculum that inspires students to be adventurers and explorers. The program supports students in a way that connects physical active lifestyle with the fields of science and conservation. “Math and Mindfulness Meet Pre-K” Jenna Roxo & Rebecca Dumphy (Parker Road School) To allow the purchase of a lending library to teachers of class sets of books focusing on math and social/emotional learning. “Harmony: Heart and Rhythm Mold Our Nimble Youth” Cathy Burke (Shrewsbury High School) To purchase Drums Alive, a program that combines the benefits of physical fitness program with the brain affected benefits of music and rhythm. The program fosters a healthy balance physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. |
